Inquiry Based Learning
Inquiry-based learning is defined as "a seeking for truth, information, or knowledge -- seeking information by questioning"(thirteen.org/edonline). From my understanding of reading in thirteen.org/edonline it implies that a person needs to have hands on and actually be involved in an activity to understand the concept being taught. This will eventualy lead to having the skills which will lead to finding answers to questions or problems.

It is well known that the customary approach to learning is focused on students mastering in content areas, with less attention on the development of skills and the nurturing of "inquiring attitudes". The customary system of education is teacher centered. The teacher gives out information to the students while the students listen and do. Today's schools are more worried with having the students go on to the next grade by assessing them than the students actually learning something that will help them throughout life. This is all so very true.
The inquiry-based learning approach is more centered around the students by gettting them actively involved.
Inquiry based learning assesses by determining if the student has progressed in skills development and also if the students understand the content material. Inquiry learning is all about students being successful in school, as well as a student being prepared for life-long learning(thirteen.org/edonline).

With Inquiry based learning the teacher is no longer behind the teacher's desk.She/He is moving around the room monitoring students and modifying their work where needed. Students are also moving around the classroom as they are working with other students on work. It is well known that children can not sit around for long periods of time. Children need to move around as much as possible.
A child can't sit still for very long so this approach would work well in the classroom.
Students could be working on their own portfolios and children can be spread out throughout the room instead of working on worksheeets sitting at their desks. Some are simple games or activities that will reinforce skills as they offer a nice break from structured learning. Others are project ideas to be completed over multiple Friday afternoons.Here are some activities that the students can work on:

Project Based Learning
Project learning is a fantastic approach to teaching in which students discover real-world problems and challenges. With this type of active and engaged learning, students are inspired to obtain a great deal of knowledge of the subjects they are studying. Project Based Learning teaches students skills. The skills learned by students are "communication and presentation skills, organization and time management skills, research and inquiry skills, self-assessment and reflection skills, and group participation and leadership skills" (pbl-online.org).
An activity that students could work on would be to give them an animal to research and find out it's habitats, characteristics,life cycle etc.. and have them work together in groups of two or three. This site has many activities and project for students such as math projects, history, government and many more other subjects.
